MATRKA - Mother of Letters

In the Saivite Philosophy...
...the letters and their ultimate nature are known as MATRKA, the Mother of Letters. She is also said to be the subtle force of gross speech which arises from the heart. Her name, however, implies that she is hard to know. "Its 'ka' suffix in Sanskrit denotes the idea that the thing to which this suffix is added is unknown or not understood. Hence, MATRKA means the mother who is not properly known or understood. When unknown, She impels people toward all kinds of worldly activities and feelings. When MATRKA is known, when her power is realized, she leads one to liberation. The key to this knowing is realizing the power of letters which are often taken for granted and thought to be mere tools for making words. The words are given credit, whereas they are the source of all delusion, and the letters are diregarded, the source of liberation.

Sanskrit letters...
...are referenced in classes (A varga, Ka varga,Cavarga, Tavarga, Tavrga, Pavarga, Yavarga, Savarga), each with a presiding diety (Yogisvari or Mahalaksmi, Brahmi, Mehesvari, Kaumari, Vaisnavi, Varahi, Aindri, Indrani, Camunda). The letters each have an association. For example: the 'ksa' represents Siva, the 'ha' represents Shakti and so forth as in the list of letters below -- links leading to short explanation of each letter's meaning. The letters are correlated throughout what the Saivite philosophy calls the 36 tattvas. This does not cover all 50 letters. There is a science beyond these meanings concerning the bija or seed letters when used in mantra recitation, yantra and chakra work. Please Note: You will notice seeming repeats of the letters in the two Tavarga groups. These are two distinctly unique groups. I am currently unable to place the diacritical marks by using html code. The distinctions will be made on the information pages.

Concerning speech...
...it can be assumed that words will be associated to the speech of the tongue, voice and mouth, even thoughts of the mind. In the Saivite philosophy there are said to be three more levels of speech in human beings. The levels correspond to our four bodies. The first is called vaikhari and corresponds to the gross body. With the subtle intellect, one can also know the second level of speech, which is in the throat. There, words have taken form but have not yet emerged. This level corresponds to the subtle body. At a deeper level, words exist in the heart. This is the third level of speech, which corresponds to the causal body. Here, words are hidden, and what arises at this level is MATRKA. Beneath this level is, parah , which corresponds to the supracausal body.

In the previous paragraph we looked at the rising of voice on four levels within the bodies. There are also levels of existence and consciousness which are listed as such: The Physical Plane or Waking State; The Subtle Plane of Existence, and Dream State; The Causal Plane of Existence, and The Deep Sleep State; The Supracausal Plane, the experience of Supreme Consciousness. All things move through these depths and risings through the levels or planes. The tattvas associated to the letters are said to do so as well. This would appear to say that the letters are akin to human experience. They too have deities, planes, movement and manifestation experiences. What is generally thought to be an inanimate object and tool used to make words is more of a living organism which when formulated in certain patterns, creates something. Although their is a heirarchy, each letter, all people, and all elements of life play a part in the whole of the matter whether in the densest of levels or the lightest.

Getting back to the movement...
of voice into manifestation, whereas the sounds of letters come forth from the unseen into the material, it has been written that parah is in the navel region, but in actuality this subtlest level of speech pervades everywhere. I call this 'belly-speak', or the second mind. The navel region or what some people relate to as instinctual knowing, is a fluid feminine human attribute much more indepth than gut feeling. These are inept titles for the source of Mother Letters. Since it is all-pervading, it can be known anywhere, even though when dealing with voice it appears to come from the fluidity of instinctual experiences. This is the feminine mystique. Not only does MATRKA have its source at this level, but all things arise at this level. In a woman's body, the womb is at this level. This is also the subtlest level of sound, which is synonymous with the energy of Shakti, (first movement) which is why this is called the para level, or paravak. "Vak" means sounding or utterance. It is a movement defined as the vibratory pulsation of the Divine Mind that brings about manifestation. This has been also known as the Logos, Cosmic Ideation, and in the Saivite philosophy being discussed, it is called Spanda - movement, or waves that create.

This level of pure energy is where energy and sound are one. It is here that the nature of movement is without any external support. It is the level before any differentiation has taken place. The first thing to arise out of this creative pulsation is sound. This goes from subtle to gross in the following way:

Paravak or Para--everywhere;
Pashyanti--level of the heart, where all letters that can be vocalized arises. MATRKA arises at this level;
Madhyama--level of the throat, where words are formed, but not yet spoken;
Vaikari--level of gross speech.

An unknown author at a website page that is no longer up: http://www.clas.ufl.edu/users/gthursby/tantra/malini.htm, once wrote:

"The Logos, or the All-Transcending Word (Paravak), germinally contains all the Sastras or Agamas in their super-sensuous form. This Logos materialises gradually into the physical form as syllables or vocables and, as such, forms the units of speech. In its preliminary materialisation as Pasyanti, the two aspects of consciousness are totally merged together and the words and their meanings are not at all separated."

This is why Mantra chanting is so predominantly a part of Saivite Philosophy. It is said by Jaidiva Singh, that in order to acquire mantra-shakti (Mantra consists of letters. This form of shakti is MATRKA) one has to approach a guru or spiritual teacher who imparts a mantra with his grace and instills the power of consciousness into it, and teaches him the mystery of MATRKA. As was said, MATRKA means the collective whole of all the letters and also the I-consciousness which is fons et origo of all the letters and thus of the entire universe of subjects and objects. Through the practice of reflecting over the mantra and feeling identity with Siva, the mantra transforms the citta or mind of the aspirant. The aspect of I-consciousness which reveals the universe as only an expression of Self is brought about finally by unmana. Unmana is also known as para vidya, the highest gnosis.
